After seeing these messages on Friday I counted almost 60 Red-rumps in their roost flight near my home. My highest count is 88 in June.

One little extra -and I have never seen them in such a big gathering in ACT or elsewhere, is that they can be very localised. Over 30 years at my Kambah home I get several observations of them probably every year, though I doubt there would ever be more than 10 (typically 2 or 4) and usually just observed flying over. Earlier this week I did have five feeding on the ground together within my GBS area and that is unusual. Within about 1 km though on the sports grounds and around the houses nearby there they are there most of the time and groups of up to 20 or 30 are typical.

Bill, that is a lot of Red-rumpeds together, I’ve checked the last Annual Bird Report and the max was 114, and around 100 for the 2 previous years.

The maximum I have seen together in my 12 years of watching their roost flight is 90, though last week I saw 80+ in their staging tree in Angophora St Rivett, where they gather together before sunrise and then fly out to the Chapman horse paddocks.

I’m in the process of writing this all up for a CBN article.

This morning I saw a mob of Red-rumped Parrots feeding on Bonner School Oval about 9.05. I counted 170 in one large group, another 10 and 8 further away. Has anyone else observed these numbers before?
