I was in Newcastle on the weekend and managed to get to Stockton Bridge at high tide this morning.
There were thousands of migration shorebirds. The majority were Red-necked Avocets and Black-winged Stilts. Next numerous were Eastern Curlew, Sharp-tail Sandpipers and Bar-tailed Godwits. There were a few Pink-eared Ducks.
I didn't go to the spot where the very small waders are usually found as it would have disturbed those mentioned above.
I also noticed at various places the Channel-billed Cuckoos. They were being hassled by resident birds and were not yet making their territorial unforgettable call.
