I observed two Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens along the Link Fire Trail (described below) this morning, and heard at least three more. The furthest from Captains flat road was heard-only at the junction of the Link Fire trail and Queanbeyan River Fire Trail. I viewed and heard other birds at the small dam part way along on the Link FT between Captains Flat Rd and that junction, as well as my first sighting (with thanks to whoever it was that I met on the trail) which was part way between Captains Flat Road and the dam.

It is about 1km, perhaps a tad more on the right.  Obvious pull off area.  A very substantial gate with a large sign warning about illegal dumping.  Yesterday the Heathwren was very close to the gate.

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how far along Captains Flat Road (after the turn off from Kings Hwy) the gate to the Link Trail is located?

Also, is it signposted? I've looked at maps and am not sure of its location.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Julie

Indeed thanks to Marnix and Christine.  Particular thanks to Julienne who was at the gate on Captains Flat Rd and showed us where she'd just seen the bird barely inside the Reserve to the left of the start of the Link Trail: no more than 30m from the fence.  After a few frustrating sightings of a shape zipping from bush to bush it climbed into an Acacia rubida, about 2m off the ground and gave good views while singing its heart out.  Then vanished and couldn't be relocated.  We walked to the junction with the Qbn River FT but no joy there, and none when we tried again near the gate.

Many thanks to Marnix for posting this sighting, and for the update on the Banded lapwings. Kim Larmour and I found two Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens this morning along the Link Trail. Very poor pics attached.

Christine.
