Ringbarking by Galahs

My assumption (without the benefit of any research!) has always been that this ringbarking kill the tree and that dead trees produce hollows more readily than living ones, with the passage of time.

The other side to this is that living trees are easier for competently-billed species to gouge a hollow in, because the living tissue is softer. So perhaps these Galahs are involved in both of these processes?

See below John.  Furthemore Elizabeth can tell you a thing or two about the current Great Bandaging Project of Wylie Street

Friends of mine showed me a photo the other day of a mature eucalypt (E. rossii from the look of it) that has been almost completely ringbarked over the last few weeks by a pair of Galahs. The ringbarking is mid-way up the main trunk and immediately below a hole they’ve been enlarging, presumably to use for nesting (but which is also being used by a possum).
Is this a common practice? Do we know their reasons for doing this?
(And no, I haven’t asked the Galahs myself.) John
