Subject: Ringbarking by Galahs
Friends of mine showed me a photo the other day of a mature eucalypt (E. rossii from the look of it) that has been almost completely ringbarked over the last few weeks by a pair of Galahs. The ringbarking is mid-way up the main trunk
and immediately below a hole they’ve been enlarging, presumably to use for nesting (but which is also being used by a possum).
Is this a common practice? Do we know their reasons for doing this?
(And no, I haven’t asked the Galahs myself.) John
