Hello all

In my role as manager of the data collection, I often have to deal with location naming, and one of my favourites as an aging pedant is this one. While Google Maps and Google Earth call it Rowes Lagoon, and some local property also use the term, the Geographical Names Board of NSW (possibly the fundamental authority on this) call it ROSE Lagoon.  As does the Australian Government as Harvey indicates below.

Driving down from Sydney you know it is coming up when you see the Edmondson VC rest area sign.

Over the years the pedant in me has spent many enjoyable hours editing text for the ABR both in the original data and in the draft publication itself, changing Rowes to Rose, all with a chuckle at the poor benighted souls who believe that everything in Google Maps must be true.

Having said all that, there is still work to be done.  I just checked the database and to my horror found 70 Rowes Lagoons, and only 56 Rose Lagoons.  Still more work to do.  Could be urgent.

Cheers

Paul

I treasure both names (Rowe's Lagoon and Rose Lagoon) a permanent reminder that our early settlers were illiterate.

I have abandoned all hope of getting proper use of the apostrophe in Rowe's, as it has been outlawed by the ignorant peasants who run RMS in NSW.

Both Rose and Rowes are preferable to the cited alternative name of Tarago lagoon, since Tarago is about 25km SE (in a straight line)!

I also use Rose Lagoon.

The official gazetted name is Rose Lagoon – see http://www.ga.gov.au/place-names/index.xhtml# and extract below.

My understanding is that the adjacent property and veterinary practice is named Rowes Lagoon, perhaps as a play on words, perhaps with legitimate historical links, I don’t know.

(sorry for revisiting this , Geoff)

Can COG members therefore confirm that the ‘Rose Lagoon’ that appears in back issues of Canberra Bird Notes is probably a misnomer and should have been ‘Rowse? If not, there are obviously two different lagoons, or a ‘lagoon by another name’!
