In  Britain there is a literary tradition associated with the First Cuckoo of Spring.
Perhaps Canberra could respond with literary responses to the Last Koel of Autumn? To get things off to an appalling start, I offer the following:

At Oh Six Hundred
Ten/Three,
Twenty Fifteen,
The Turner Koel called.

A Koel tick!
COG databased,
as a mere incidental,
It fell silent.

Was it prey to the Autumnal siren call
of warmer climes?
Or was it playing Tantalus?
Will the mere possibility of the Last Koel
Silently steal my sleep?

We have had a juvenile koel in our garden since 16 Feb - fed by wattlebirds.  Yesterday, an adult male koel visited the garden briefly, calling several times ("whirra" call).  The juvenile (which usually begs constantly) sat quietly in a nearby tree during the adult's visit.

When I commented in my email yesterday that the last time I heard the Kaleen Koel was Saturday, who should pop up calling at 0628 this morning but the Kaleen Koel, so he is still around. I gather from an email sent to me by Jack Holland that both Barbara A and Christine D still have Koels around. In fact Christine sent me an email that she had 4 Koels in her garden yesterday. I will keep an ear out to see if the local bird calls any more over the next few days.
