Well thanks and a quick find. That is new.......... My technology knowledge is not that new........ I would expect the information available is based on comparison of samples with known other individuals. Surely stuff like breeding behaviour and dispersal is based on making the connections, once the relationships are worked out (as has been done with Fairy-wrens at ANBG for years). DNA is a step in the process rather than the answer.

a Melbourne researcher, Dr Fiona Hogan, has been doing a lot of work on this  in Powerful Owls (as well as other bird species, and more recently in koalas), and has extracted DNA from single feathers from the owls from many locations, mainly in Victoria. She's  looked not just at individual characteristics, but also breeding behaviour and dispersal.
