First birds were magpies carolling. Lovely.

Happy Christmas, everyone.

My first bird of the day in Lyons this morning was a Koel too, in the grey
half-light of dawn. This was closely followed by the clacking of cleats as
son number one walked to his bike for his morning ride, then the strains of
a piano-accordion as son number two started early practice on his Christmas
present... altogether, a long way from the muffled snowy stillness of
childhood Christmas mornings in England. Now the call of the Koel evokes not
just warm Australian evenings, but also warm Australian Christmas mornings.

Happy Christmas all, and the best birding today and every day,

Steve

For my sins, a Koel has taken up local residence. While listening to its
plaintive tones at about 4.30 this morning, the following wording
(hopefully more or less original) came to mind, to the tune of The First
Noel...

The first Koel
The angels did say
Came to torment poor birders
In their beds where they lay

In their beds where they lay
a-counting the sheep
On a hot summer's night
When they couldn't sleep

That's all I managed before the fiend went quiet. Further additions
welcome.
