Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for an Id.

The discussion and additional information was valuable to me​ and it's good to know that even very experienced bird people don't always agree on Ids.

I'm sure it would have been easier with better quality  photos.

I have lightened the photos to better see the detail ... the bird was large and was dark in overall colour, with the head appearing a little lighter.
