Another recent breeding -

3 young Australasian Grebes were keeping parents busy about a week ago at the dam on cnr Flemington and Randwick Roads near showground (Mitchell?) I don't know if this is usual. Last baby grebes I recall seeing were midsummer.

Very interesting Steve, as it’s one of the very few breeding records posted on this chat line this autumn.  In my May Gang-gang column I had come to the conclusion that the rain hadn’t triggered breeding that I would have expected based on similar rain events in the past 10 years or so.

During a walk on the western slopes of Mt Ainslie yesterday morning, Prue and I found a pair of Speckled Warblers with 2 fledglings. The young birds looked straight off the nest to me – very clumsy, with rudimentary tails and little bits of down sticking out of their heads. In the COG atlas there is a record of a nest with young in April, and I think there was a late record last year too. A long breeding season considering they start in winter, the good rains in early autumn may be the cause. Or perhaps it’s a regular occurrence and just hasn’t been noticed very often.

Also of interest, 3 or 4 Fuscous Honeyeaters and a couple of brown Rose Robins.
