During a walk on the western slopes of Mt Ainslie yesterday
morning, Prue and I found a pair of Speckled Warblers with 2 fledglings. The
young birds looked straight off the nest to me – very clumsy, with rudimentary
tails and little bits of down sticking out of their heads. In the COG atlas
there is a record of a nest with young in April, and I think there was a late
record last year too. A long breeding season considering they start in winter,
the good rains in early autumn may be the cause. Or perhaps it’s a regular
occurrence and just hasn’t been noticed very often.
Also of interest, 3 or 4 Fuscous Honeyeaters and a couple of
brown Rose Robins.
