Getting obscure now. I am aware to some level of reduced interest in the naming of the various possible Koel factions (because I expect whatever it is now to not be the final outcome and I wonder if we really can fit a species divide there) but I am lost as to the relevance of the Shadow Minister for the Environment wants to extirpate both species or only the latter. In particular why should such a person have a view on this and how do we know they do if they do and why would we care?

Mea culpa.

I had got myself confused in the memory of an exchange on Birding-aus where the various taxonomies seem to take various approaches to Asian, Pacific, Australian and Eastern Koels.

It appears that the BA Rarities Committee (BARC_Australian_Checklist_v2014Jan) see the two possible species in Australia as Asian Koel (Indian Ocean Islands) and Pacific Koel.  That source seems to regard the name 'Eastern Koel' as passe.  This seems to lead to view that BA and its rarities committee are using different names which could lead to some interesting outcomes.

The BirdLife Oz Working list has 9937 Asian Koel Eudynamys scolopaceus as a vagrant and 347 Eastern Koel Eudynamys orientalis a separate species.

It is unclear if the Shadow Minister for the Environment wants to extirpate both species or only the latter.

We hold our collective and individual breaths for ACT records of the former.

Given that there have been emanations (if not ukases, bulls and diktat) from BA declaring this to be known as the Asian Koel , one is hardly surprised to find a relatively newly elected politician is misled.

Indeed I expect various Strikeforces are labouring as I type getting imagery together for a "Stop the Koels" campaign in the lead-up to the next election. I trust you will be alert to any infringement of your copyright.
