In past years there have been infrequent sightings of single Ospreys along the Far South Coast with 2 birds taking up residence in the Tathra River, not far upstream from Mogareeka, for many months in 2012.

Since April 2013 at least one was a regular in and around Merimbula Lake with 2 birds sighted together often since August. More recently there have been many sightings and photographs of fish being caught and carried from the lake towards the Merimbula Creek where the pair have been seen roosting. No nest has been located unfortunately.

As well as the couta boat at Fishpen (near the lake entrance) and oyster posts within the lake, poles near the Hotel are favourites and a tree not far along the Boardwalk walk west from town was another perch earlier in the year.

Would a sighting of an osprey at Merimbula be an unusual sighting, so far south? They are that far south in WA, but I don't know about the east coast
