Hi Elizabeth,

 

As other people have said, it is a Grey Butcherbird. If the first photo is of one of the birds attending the nest then it is not quite in its full adult plumage. They are not generally a common species in the urban areas, let alone nesting in the suburbs. It is a good record.

We have a pied butcherbird (I think) with 3 beautiful babies in our garden in Hellyer Street Holder.  The babies are well developed but still calling for food and hiding in the foliage while the parent - presumably mother, finds and brings back food.
