The
first question is what books have you checked with. The only local small sized raptor with a reddy/dusty brown wings, back and head, and a lighter brown breast
is the Kestrel. Or some reddish Brown Falcons. Neither of them would
normally kept jumping away from me to higher and
higher perches. They would normally just sit where they are or fly
to another perch or fly away. But a Brown
Goshawk or Collared Sparrowhawk would behave that way. They are both
finely barred reddish on the front (not back) as adults or broadly barred
brown on the front as young birds. Adults of both have a reddish hind neck.
Probably is one of those two.

Hi
This evening at about 5.00pm as i was walking around
suburban Wanniassa a raptor suddenly landed about 10m right in front of me (to
my delight). I am not completely sure what it was but it had reddy/dusty brown
wings, back and head, and a lighter brown breast. I didn't get a good look but
it didn't appear obviously barred or with cream coloured parts. It was a
small-med sized raptor. Hard to know if the roosting galahs were just thier
noisy selves or were spooked, but a magpie sure had a problem with
it!
Apologies for vagueness in description, but it was falling dusk and i
was binocularless. I stalked it a bit but it kept jumping away from me to higher
and higher perches. I didn't get a look at it's tail shape in flight.
Any
ideas? I thought a brown goshawk best fitted the reddy brown back and general
size. I thought they were secretive birds generally and it did land in a fairly
open suburban area next to the road.
Cheers,
Joanne
