The key phrase in the SMH article provided by Sandra was IMHO the one highlighted below.

"Environment Minister Robyn Parker said in a statement: ''The NSW government does not support commercial logging in national parks and has no plans to allow it. Once the committee's report is finalised and tabled in Parliament, the government will respond in the usual fashion.''

The usual fashion is surely "Yes, Mr Brown."  

I await with bated breath the response from the ALP and wonder why they haven't joined The Greens in immediately condemning this.

I can see where Mark is coming from in the last paragraph of his reply, but reckon he is a bit harsh on monkeys.

Further to this and Con’s previous message, I was watching a police show on the TV last night that included a segment on deer shooting in Victoria’s high country. One deer shooter caught by police didn’t have a shooters licence, didn’t know it was illegal to shoot from a public road, detailed how he shot up a sign in the Alpine National Park and didn’t know it was illegal to have a firearm, let alone shoot, in a national park. These are the sort of morons who are potentially going to be allowed in our national parks and nature reserves. In my working career with CSIRO I worked with many professional shooters. I know the vast majority of these are appalled at the O’Farrell governments decision to let amateur shooters (Note: shooters NOT hunters) into the state’s reserves. The fact that the committee listed below was chaired by the head of the Shooters and Fishers Party, Robert Brown, is exactly the same as letting Dracula run the blood bank or the fox run the chicken coop.

 

The old saying that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, shows that we may be better off in this case paying peanuts as I am sure they could do better than some state or federal politicians!

and yet another bad idea before the NSW Parliament - and what's stated in the article cited, but not the birding-aus message below, is that the committee making this recommendation was chaired by Shooters and Fishers Party MP Robert Brown. Obviously doesn't give a damn about the environment...

A NSW Parliamentary enquiry has recommended logging in NSW National Parks. The NSW Environment Minister has said that the Government has no plans to allow commercial logging in National Parks. But then, prior to the state election, the now NSW Premier said that there were no plans to allow shooting in National Parks. I suppose all we need now is open cut mining in NSW National Parks to have the trifecta. For details of the report, see;
