Hi Rod,
A group of people from QLD Nats will be visiting Currawinya for several days from the 16th. So we may meet up. We will be staying at Ourimperee Waterhole, which incidentally has recently had water in it from a resent fresh down the Paroo. The area had about 4 inches of rain about 3 weeks ago as did Kilcowera. This waterhole is the one Mark C. referred too, except that it is near the Currawinya woolshed. Caiwarro is the adjoin property further north that is part of the park where there are 3 campsites near the old station ruins.
Currawinya is self registration and the cost is around $5.60 per person per night. The Ranger Station is not continuously manned and the phone number is 07 4655 4001 and if you ring and it is unanswered leave a message and they will get back to you. At the moment the road out to the Lakes is open and recently graded, however if it rains again it could be closed.
Kilcowera is a largish cattle and sheep property about half way between Hungerford and Thargomindah you can camp there with all facilities at the shearers quarters or on one of two waterholes which have filled recently. A 4wd track leads east to the boundary of Currawinya and it is possible to view the huge pelican rookery there in breeding season. Contact details are as follows. Toni & Greg Sherwin www.kilcowera.co.au, 07 4655 4960 m("bigpond.com","gtsherwin");"> We have camped at Kilcowera previously and can recommend it.
This trip coming up will be the first for us since the camp Phillip V. mentions, which we were also on We will also be going on to Kilcowera again. South of the border on the Fords Bridge/Bourke road just north of the area called Yantabulla is a station property called Naree, which has recently been taken over by Bush Heritage and it is on part of Yantabulla Swamp, the biggest of a number of swamps in the Cuttaburra creek flood out area. Yantabulla swamp is rated by Proffesror Richard Kingsford as probably one of the most signficant wetland areas in Australia. But I am not sure what access, if any, is available. Just south of Yantabulla a road off to the NE leads to Comeroo (you will find it on the web), which is to the south of the swamp adjoining Cuttaburra creek and is set up for camping and good for birds. The Ford’s Bridge Hungerford road can be dicey in the wet and there is also a section of sharp stones, but owing to all the swamps can be great for birds. There is another better road between Ford’s Bridge and Comeroo and I am sure if you contact them they would give you the drum.
Hope some of this helps.
Cheers John Walter

Subject: [canberrabirds] Out of area - request for info.
I will be visiting this NP shortly as part of an extended outback trip. It's a Ramsar site so I expect some good birding there. My question relates to the camping areas, facilities etc. - can anyone who has been there make any recommendations, or offer any advice in this regard? Any hints on best birding locations would also be appreciated.
