This morning I was intrigued by a harsh staccato short trill/twitter coming from trees in the back garden at home (Gleneagles, Kambah). It turned out to be an Australian Reed-Warbler, and even more surprisingly it was carrying food, which it fed to a juvenile in a pittosporum outside the kitchen window. The call was one I didn’t recognise and certainly hadn’t previously associated with a reed-warbler. The juvenile only made begging calls when the adult approached it with food.

Our place is not one in which I’d expect to encounter an Australian Reed-Warbler, but we have had them in the garden previously, at least 3 or 4 times over the past three years – generally in the bushes/trees around the pool.

There seems little doubt that they come from the various ponds at the Murrumbidgee golf course, the closest of these being about 300 m from home.
