A formative part of my bird interest was the (presumed) one Australian Hobby
(I never saw it partnered with another) that perched regularly on always the
same one out of 4 dead branches that stood out above one large gum at East
Camberwell railway station near my school (Camberwell high, in Melbourne)
and could be seen as a dot on the horizon, about 700 metres from the school.
It would also stay perched there whilst being watched from below and of
course being at a railway station would have seen many people pass by. I
would monitor it as it arrived and left sometimes getting told off for
gazing out the window in class time and one time I watched as it flew all
that distance and caught some small bird as it flew off the school building.
Unfortunately I did not keep records of dates, as it would be there every
day for several months and then not for several months. But this behaviour
occurred unchanged throughout the 4 years I was at that school (1971 to
1974). It is one of the reasons I like the bird and contributed in some
little way to the choosing of my painting of that species for the cover of
The GBS Report.
