Around 15:00 this afternoon, with thunder rolling to the north and east,
I observed a lone male Black Honeyeater moving southwards through the
large trees west of the Pipeline Road in Mulligan's Flat Sanctuary. For
those who remember, this is the same area as the birds were in 2006/7.
I tried to follow but it was quickly out of sight.
At the large dam were numerous Hoary-headed Grebes and Hardheads, 8
Chestnut Teal, 2 Freckled Ducks and a female Musk Duck in addition to
the birds reported by Marnix. At other (smaller) dams in the Sanctuary
were both an adult and an immature White-necked Heron, a Great Egret,
numerous White-faced Herons, White and Straw-necked Ibis, Great, Little
Black and Little Pied Cormorants and several Australian Darters. This
is rather impressive for what is ostensibly a woodland reserve!
