Yes the big eyes and the white around the eyes is very obvious. Just maybe this is of social signalling value in perhaps allowing other birds (presumably of their family) to see if they are sleeping or not. But this is only visible at close range. On a frivolous note, maybe I can suggest that rather than "It seems to make them even harder to see" as being important. That closing the eyes makes seeing even harder for them.

Most od these birds seem to have their eyes shut. Is this common in painted snipe? It seems to make them even harder to see. Any comment?
