Hi David,

There are a pair of Peregrines in the city, although they may not venture across the lake as they have enough plump pigeons here.

I've also heard a Koel calling from somewhere near City Hill over the last few mornings.  This is the first one I've heard in this area since moving here over seven years ago.

Regards,

Subject: [canberrabirds] Currawong chaos

My morning walk takes me along Canterbury Cres, not far from Parliament House.  There is always a noisy collection of Currawongs there, in the trees, feeding on the ground, chasing each other and all the time calling.  This morning I got a glimpse of a chase but the chaser was not a Currawong.  It was a bit smaller and had sharp wings – the jizz said falcon.  The event set off total cacophony as birds came from everywhere.  I looked around for the attacking bird which obligingly came back.  It was a Peregrine Falcon.  Did someone report PGs operating around PH or was it only at Defence and at Woden?

As I continued my walk, I observed a pair of Gang-gangs inspecting a hollow and chewing bark in a eucalyptus in the park next to the Lodge (in the same spot that I saw a Long-billed Corella the other day).

Also, a couple of days ago, a pair of Olive-backed Orioles flew over Melbourne Avenue heading north.
