Hi all
Dusted the camera and lens off for the first time in months this morning and
headed off to Mulligan's Flat to see how things were progressing in the
reserve. Without seeing any rarities, I was suitably impressed by the amount
of bird activity, with most of the usual suspects around, including
Olive-backed Orioles, White-necked Heron, Leaden Flycatcher nesting, Varied
Sitella, Mistletoebird, Brown-headed Honeyeater and many Shining
Bronze-Cuckoos. The last mentioned provided the highlight for the morning,
with a group of at least 4 hanging around together, flying between trees,
calling consistently and raising their wings, presumably in some sort of
display. Anyone know what purpose this serves in bronze-cuckoos? Attached is
a photo of one with wings raised.
I was also very impressed by the amount of insects around, in particular
smaller ones, with a heap of small wasps and beetles buzzing around. Also
Stencilled and Amethyst Hairstreaks amongst the usual suspects on the
butterfly front.
Nothing of note at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands as I dropped past on the way
back, except for the 5 Freckled Duck out on Kelly's.
Cheers
Tobias
