Not a useful generalisation, Nick. This message with the below paste-in is less than 100kb. Let’s just say, to avoid a whole lot of recapitulation, that paste-ins should be deleted before replying

I have been asked to remind subscribers that one of the rules of the list is that emails sent to it should not exceed 100 kB in size. The reason for this rule is that some people are (apparently) still on dial-up internet access and others have very limited and/or expensive download allowances - this includes people accessing the list via smartphones, iPads, etc.
An email sent to the list a few days ago included a photo 1 MB in size, and three other subscribers have re-sent the same photo to the list.
Pasting a photo inline rather than sending it as an attachment is one of the principal problems, even when a photo has been reduced in size. Not only does it greatly increase the size of the mail, but it also results in the photo being included inline in any replies.
I just did a test by sending a couple of mails to myself, both containing the same 201Kb image. The mail with the image sent as an attachment was 268Kb in size in my inbox. The mail with the image pasted into the text area was 2.1 Mb in size - about eight times as large.
