Hi all,

Many of you will know Fred Van Gessel from trips to Iron Range or even earlier trips to Newcastle wader banding. Those on the last trip to Iron Range and who were camped at Kingfisher Park will remember his little accident! He is also a brilliant sound recordist. Fred is employed by Phil Hansbro at the Newcastle (NSW) University and is trying to collect faecal samples from Common Blackbirds for a study that Phil is doing comparing something in the faecal samples from Australia to that from English (and European?) birds. Fred will be in Canberra from November 16 – 18 to try and collect his samples. If any of the Canberra banding team have Blackbirds in their gardens and can help Fred on those days, or other members of COG are able to help please contact Fred directly. As I said above, please contact Fred directly as I will be in South America when Fred is in town and I know nothing of the project.
