Weddin Mtn - Black and Pied Honeyeaters [SEC=UNOFFICIAL]

Hi all

 

At the 125th banding trip to Richard Allen's Weddin Mtn site near Grenfell over the weekend of 19-21 October 2012, we were lucky enough to be inundated by Black Honeyeaters and also had a pair of Pied Honeyeaters.

 

These are typically more inland birds. It is definitely the first time Pied Honeyeaters have been seen there by the banding team, and I think probably the first for Black Honeyeaters as well.

 

The Black Honeyeaters were concentrated around a creek line and adjacent more open areas, feeding mainly on the flowering ironbark and White Box, though I did also watch a female manipulate and finally swallow a small green damselfly. We banded 31 of these little gems, of both sexes (15 males, 15 females and 1 immature). Not one of them was retrapped over the weekend so there must have been a LOT of them about, possibly moving through.

 

The Pied Honeyeaters were in the same area and we managed to trap and band both. Beautiful bird and a lifer for all four of us who were there!

 

Will be worth keeping an eye out for such inland species in Canberra over the coming season.
