Hi,

Concerning the gulls on Spinnaker Island, a couple of members of COG
(including myself) in association with the Canberra Yacht Club, have been
monitoring the gull population for the last three years, see articles in
CBN. The monitoring is being done on behalf of the NCA with a report
written each year of the survey results. In return the NCA is providing a
donation to COG.

For further details look at CBN which are available on the COG web. A
report on the 2011-12 breeding season has been provided to the NCA and will
be published in the next CBN.

As far as I know this was first noticed in Dec 2008 when I was trying out
my new kayak. I reported to the database and to Chris who was interested in
the nesting of gulls on nearby boats. Some database entries got mixed up,
but one of us made this report on 10/12/2008 ...

I can't recall that anyone else has commented on this, but I reckon you're
right Peter. I paddled by there approx 7.15pm today but didn't have time to
land. There were hundreds of birds including many in situ on the ground,
looking very much like they were "on". I saw one downy chick and many young
juveniles. While they were not actually swooping, the birds were raucous
and hovering over me as I paddled by. Hopefully I'll get a chance for a
closer look between now and the weekend, but in my (non) expert opinion I'd
say there was a major breeding event in progress.

Cheers

Rod
