Hi Des,

Dawn chorus is absolutely a widespread thing, so certainly not restricted to
Australia. They may even occur in the false dawn of a solar eclipse (i.e.
not dawn). I can only suggest that maybe at that place there are not many
birds that do it, or the people you spoke to might call it something else or
but I don't know what, or the people you spoke to don't get up in the
morning, as all the books and articles I have referred to (or contributed
to) on the subject call it that.

Philip

I am just back from the United States where we visited Yellowstone
National Park. During a conversation with some
people interested in birds I mentioned that I had not heard a "dawn
chorus". What is a dawn chorus came the reply?
This raises a question as to whether 'dawn choruses' are unique to
Australia or else there is some other explanation?
I am uncertain as to how widespread in the world this phenomenon is?

Des Clark-Walker.
