Just a note form my own personal experience.

We live in Hughes, just up from the Primary School. We have some natives in our yard, which is also quite dense and unkempt. We used to have many small birds, we have had nearly all the small bird species which are seen in Canberra back yards at one time or another, and time was that you could go out the back and almost always see Silvereyes or Pardalotes.

About six years ago Hughes Primary cleared some trees and their resident Miners moved up to our yard and the gardens round about. Since then the number of small birds had declined dramatically and it is only occasionally we get a few of the commoner species through. No more MFFs in winter either.

:-(
