The earliest knowledge I have of a cattle grid was in the
1960s at “Clinton Park” , Wattamolla ,Kangaroo Valley in the
1960s. A row of 5” euc poles was laid above a culvert. This
allowed vehicles to pass over eliminating the need for a gate. It stopped
horses and cattle getting into the home garden. A later version in
Barrrengarry, Kangaroo
Valley was made of
railway sleepers with gaps in between at the main entrance. The milk truck and
other vehicles could enter without stopping for a gate. Cattle could not
get out onto the road. There was a gate beside the cattle grid to use
when necessary. There are metal cattle grids on rural roads in the ACT past
Tharwa and on Mulligans Flat Road.
