Hi All – Following on from Terry’s briefing on the Lyneham/Dickson
wetlands I would like to let people know that I have agreed to do the bird
survey for the ACT Govt for the new Banksia Street wetland (developed about
two-three years ago) in Lyneham (adjacent to the tennis courts) and will start
during January 2012. Banksia is more established than Dickson or Lyneham with
the grasses and reeds to a reasonable height. It suffers from being so close to
the road and is only a very small area so difficult to draw a boundary and say
this the zone for the bird count. At this stage there are only 2 wood ducks plus
some chicks but quite a few birds in amongst the surrounding trees.
Please let me know if you would like to join me for this task.
For those COG members interested in this project I
provide the following update:
The Lyneham site is months from completion , no
access, security fencing, and eathworks unfinished. Area about 25 acres, some
trees and shrubs at southern end. Due to recent rain impoundment about half-full
and about 20 waterfowl present today including pacific, wood and hardhead ducks
( 8 ). Other common birds present and a hobby falcon observed in adjacent
parkland.
The Dickson site is much further developed and the
fencing removed. It will be visited next Tuesday, 2/1/2012 by Messrs Bell &
Munro, plus anyone else so motivated starting about 0830. The actual
surveys are planned to start mid- January when ACT Government officer returns
from leave. Because of the close proximity of these sites and the convenience
factor bird counts are planned on twice monthly basis using the new reporting
forms.
Please ring Terry Bell 0427292298 if any other COG
member would like to participate
