Frank and I watched two painted-snipe, the male and the immature female, for about twenty minutes from 18:05 h yesterday afternoon. We saw no sign of the adult female in that time or in the ten to fifteen minutes either side of that. They were in the clumpy grass areas to either end of the long log.

The three birds were visible most of the morning and one does appear to be a male - it has different wing markings and the shield at the front is a different shape.  I have some photos of the wings of the male but I believe others may have better ones.  Attached is a photo taken from video footage showing the different shape and colour of the front shield.  I cannot find any mention of the difference in shape in the references I have.  Could someone with access to HANZAB please check to see if the shield shape difference is mentioned?

As well, two Glossy Ibis were in the same area. One was inconsiderate enough to block the view of the three Painted-snipe at one point!  Two Cattle Egrets were also foraging around the cattle.
