The Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary,
behind Forde, preserves an outstanding example
of box-gum woodland - long recognised
as one of Canberra?s best birdwatching sites -
home to the Regent Honeyeater and
Superb Fairy Wren among others, plus many native
plants and animals. Now enclosed with a
predator-proof fence, and after extensive
work by ACT Parks & Conservation
Service (PCS) Rangers to remove the foxes and cats,
the site is now suitable for the
reintroduction of some rare and threatened species.
Brown treecreepers have already been
established and are being closely monitored.
Next on the agenda -
Bettongs!
In the longer term, it is hoped the
Sanctuary will act as an outdoor laboratory and
opportunity for engaging and informing
the community about our native plants and
animals in a natural setting. Plans are
that small bandicoots and populations of
Bush Stone Curlews will also thrive
here.
For the re-establishment program to be
successful, it is vital that the Sanctuary fences
and gates are regularly monitored to
prevent re-introduction of feral pests. If you
are a regular visitor, bushwalker,
birdwatcher or recreational user of the Sanctuary
- YOU CAN
HELP!
ACT PCS Rangers & ANU scientists
working in the site also need helpers -
do you enjoy learning about wildlife or
native plants, weeding, GPS tracking, checking
pitfall traps or just general ?work
with your hands??
If so, by joining the Mulligans Flat
Friends Group you can help your community, enjoy
opportunities for recreation and contribute to a
worthwhile project.
Come along, meet fellow like-minded
people, listen to the rangers
and scientists talk about their work and hear how
you can help.
