Yes, if the mouse bait is a Warfarin based compound, as most are, it will be
toxic for birds too.  The mice do not die instantly, but slowly from
internal haemorrhages.

A good question, Terry. There is a lot of bait around to try and 
control these rodents, and I too have wondered whether a bird eating 
them could ingest the toxins.

As it turns out, my 2 year-old grandson found a freshly deceased 
mouse on the driveway just this morning - he was visibly saddened, 
promptly declaring that it was his favourite mouse. :)  Not sure 
where it came from, but we buried it in the garden specifically to 
avoid it being eaten by any of my tame magpies (having previously 
seen them with a dead mouse).

I'd certainly be interested in an informed opinion as to whether 
birds could be affected by eating rodents that have ingested poisons.
