In last Saturday's Canberra Times there was a
booklet advertising National Science Week to be run 13-21 August
2011.
On page 15 of the booklet was a list of projects to
be run under the federally funded 'Inspiring Australia' (IA) program.
Unlike most of the National Science Week programs IA projects will run over a 12
month period with the idea of getting the public interested in science for more
than a week.
COG was invited to submit a project proposal to the
IA program. We were successful in our application and the launch of the
project titled 'Investigating ACT urban birds' will be at 2.00-4.00pm on Sunday
21 August at the CSIRO Discover Centre lecture theatre.
The project is intended to allow the public to find
out more about birds and on the way collect data within their suburbs. The
project will involve field outings to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Black Mountain
and Mulligan's Flat to learn about birds in different habitats whilst the data
collection part of the project will involve participants setting up a minimum of
two transects each one km long within their suburb and once a month record the
birds they find along each transect.
The project is being run by Michael Robbins, Sue
Lashko, Lia Battisson and me and we are seeking COG members to participate in
the project. Due to logistic reasons we have put a cap of 40 participants
on the project and registrations must be through the CSIRO Discovery Centre Tel:
02 6246 4646 or by email to
.
