Cutting to the chase, the GBS narrative indicates that this is, as David suggests, an early record for a newly fledged Crested Pigeon.

Over 29 years the GBS has 989 Breeding records for Crested Pigeon.  Of these 387 (39%) are Display and occur in 51 weeks, with a peak from mid July to mid October.  Nest Building accounts for 107 (10.8%)  records with a faint peak from early August to early October.  There are 270 (27.3%) On Nest records clumped from mid-August  to end October.   As for all species there are very few (48 – 4.9% - in total) Nest with Eggs or Young records.  The Nest with Young records occur from  late August to late October.  Dependent Young  were recorded 128 (12.9%) times  with a rather ‘flat’ distribution from early September through to early February.  So the tale hangs together rather well.

On Monday afternoon (8 Aug) I rescued a newly fledged Crested Pigeon from choughs outside my house in Hackett. Given that we are still in the depths of winter would this be an early breeding record?
