Margaret,

 

I think the robin species you are thinking of is the Flame Robin, a species that nests in the “high country” in Spring  but spends the Winters lower down, usually in fairly open country. As most of the other replies have noted, the Scarlet Robin is a breeding bird generally of the woodlands but can also be found in the wetter forests in the Brindabellas. To my mind it is a bird that is declining, both locally and over SE NSW.

Please correct me if I am barking up the wrong tree.  Yesterday on Callum Brae, I heard, clearly and repeatedly, a plaintiff call that sounded to me like a scarlet robin.  Having my MP3 player with me, as you do, I played the scarlet robin call, and the two were identical.  Since most of the birds seem to think it is spring already, shouldn’t the scarlet robin have moved on by now?
