Three of us walked to Square Rock in Namadgi NP today. The track starts at
Smokers Gap car park on Corin Rd, heads up the ridge to Smokers Flat and then
along the ridgeline to a nice rock formation. A side track goes to a lookout
over the Orroral Valley.
All up we recorded 20 species with the highlights being a pair of Spotted
Quail-thrush by Smokers Flat and a pair of Red-browed Treecreepers in a mixed
feeding flock which also included a White-throated Treecreeper. These birds
were only some 200 metres from the road.
At Square Rock (1400m) while having lunch a Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring on the
thermals came in close for a look.
No sign of any Olive Whistlers at Smokers Flat despite spending some time
searching.
We encountered a Satin Bowerbird at the Orroral lookout, probably interested in
the patch of shrubs with red berries (species?).
