Hi Martin,

The presumably original reference you mention that a difference between the breeding nests and communal 'roost-nests" is that the latter have no entrance tunnel is Klaus Immelmann 1965 Australian Finches in bush and aviary, page 36, with other useful information that might help the question.

Good bunch of birds.

WRT the Diamond Firetail nest I recall (but can no longer find the reference) that a difference between the breeding nests and communal 'roost-nests" is that the latter have no entrance tunnel.  It would be interesting to know if this nest had an entrance tunnel as it seems rather late to be building a breeding nest.

We drove south, this morning, to Williamsdale and then across on the road to Angle Crossing to, hopefully, see migrating yfhes. We didn't see any. We drove further south and branched off on Kelly Road.  Here we hit a small jackpot

3 brown tree-creepers
6--8 diamond firetails, attending an untidy nest, 1 seen carrying in nesting material
15 dusky wood swallows
1 hobby
10 yellow rumped thornbills
1white-plumed honeyeater
