Hello
Charmain,
Yes
you are correct. I have been watching this pair of Galahs there for this week.
One sits on the light fitting whilst the other excavates the hole. Easily seen
from the bridge and they don't mind people watching from about 2 metres away. I
go past there a few times each day. I have advised the visitors centre, who will
advise the volunteer guides so that they can point it out on their 11 am and 2
pm guided walks. I don't know if the message gets through
though.
I now
see that I actually already mentioned this in my message Rufous Fantail & Koel etc. at ANBG today
of Friday.

Hi
I was sitting having coffee on the covered
verandah at the Botanic Gardens this morning, facing the foot bridge. Just next
to the bridge, on the side closer to the Cafe is a tall gum tree. For some time
I noticed what looked like wood chips flying out of the tree and onto the
ground, making quite a mulch to one side of it, but couldn't see what was
producing it. It turned out to be a galah, not much above head height, on the
other side, madly excavating a hole in the tree - digging a new nest or
refurbishing an old? If so, isn't that an odd time of the year to be doing so?
The hole must have been quite deep because only part of its tail feathers were
showing.
Also seen from Hindmarsh Drive, a large
Wedge Tailed Eagle flying over the wooded area of Red Hill (about
2.30).
