'Twas only a matter of time I thought before a
Swift Parrot turned up in the flowering ironbarks along the Cook cycleway near
Lyttleton Cres. I thought I heard one zoom over the house on Saturday evening
but it was dusk and I couldn't get away to confirm it.
But this morning I heard one then saw two
in one of the ironbarks just south of Lyttleton Cres. There may be
more but I didn't have the time (or the bins with me) to stop and check.
Certainly didn't notice the bill colour 20m up against the steely grey
sky.
Lately these trees have been popular
with Rainbow Lorikeets, and half a dozen Superb Parrots which nip
the flowers off but just clean the lerps from the outside then discard the
nectar-rich blossom. I can imagine the lorikeets, noisy miners, red wattlebirds
and now Swift Parrots shaking their heads at this wanton waste.
If you're lucky you might see a Swift Parrot,
Superb Parrot and Rainbow Lorikeet all in the one tree. Given the different
habitats, ranges and seasonal movements of these three species you wouldn't
often expect them to coincide. Now that would make a nice (un-photoshopped)
picture.
cheers
