During 2006 & 2007 residents either side
of Truallo Ridge in Hoskinstown and Forbes Creek were assailed with 'the
screaming woman call'
I put the question to the chatline. An
original consensus/guess(??) of Barking Owl was withdrawn when in 2007 a few of
us residents heard the calls again in Oct. I even heard 2 owls calling (
screaming) in close proximity to each other. Unfortunately the owls were not
seen. My attempt was to see them was foiled when I tripped over a wombat. It was
one of those nights.
However the 'scream did not sound like Ed
McNabb's call.
Now I have the BOCA bird calls.
Our calls were not similar to the BOCA
Barking Owl calls.
Perhaps we had Sooty Owls or the calls may
have been Barn Owls. Both are possible.
I hope we get the calls again
as I would love to sort out
which bird it was.
I would welcome any
comment.

'Interesting to hear on Radio National just now Ed McNabb
playing and discussing owl calls. This raised the old chestnut whether the
Barking Owl or the Sooty Owl is the ?Screaming Woman Bird?. The calls
played allowed an interesting comparison, both being moderately scream-like if
you want to hear them that way. The name for the owl was suggested before
the present era of the scream connoisseur when we have available the full
spectrum of screams made possible by rock musicians and their fans, TV and
films. It seems to me that the answer to the question ?which owl?? turns
on what you think a screaming woman sounds like. So many birdwatchers
might know their owls but are not all that familiar with Screaming Women.
Even the most book-burdened outdoors-person is unlikely to have a field guide
that covers that subject adequately.
