Hi

Have just returned from a weekend away at Wangaratta and in relation to the early nesting posts, some people in Rutherglen area also mentioned to me today that they had seen occurrences of this. The person i was speaking to was a winemaker who had notced a Grey Shrike-thrush, which had nested in their cellar door in previous years, had this week started to bring nesting material to its familiar site.  Nothing outstanding in this, though as a winemaker, she commented that some false buds had sprouted on their vines two weeks ago, following good rain and drew the assumption that this may have tricked the GST somehow? All a bit subjective for mine but interesting nonetheless.

Incidentally, the birding at Warby Ranges NP NW of Wangaratta was quite productive.    1000s of Noisy Friars and Wattlebirds in the Northern (flowering) Ironbark, and in the central Box area, with some Callitris, Little Lorikeet, Gilbert's Whistler, numerous Honeyeater and thankfully the bird I was after, the Turquoise Parrot.  Flame, Red-capped and Scarlet Robins aplenty.  Way out of COGs range though relevant for those birdwatchers who also enjoy their grape juice in combination with our grand hobby!

regards
Stuart Harris
