It is curious, maybe regrettable, that they decided not to wait and considered that putting the Gang Gangs through the trauma and the RSPCA through the effort of hand raising them, preferable to waiting a few more weeks. As for the Hobbies' nest, it is curious that the letter indicates awareness of it but the email says "no nest could be located for the Australian Hobby". Maybe that nest failed, was predated or whatever. As I wrote before, if the chicks had fledged I think any nearby observers would be aware of that.

Both species are significant although not rare, not something unimportant.

I don't know the tree, but outrage or not, we can't deny the responsibility of the organisation for community safety.

Thanks for sharing that Wendy. Gee that makes me so angry that they couldn’t wait until the nesting Gang Gangs had finished breeding for the year. If the tree was fenced, what was the rush? I hope COG could jointly and formally express to TAMS the birding community’s collective outrage...

I emailed TAMS this morning to express concern about the tree pruning.  I asked whether expert advice had been sought in relation to the nesting birds and also what qualifications the various "experts" had.

Here's the response I received for what it's worth.

I too share your disappointment about the extensive pruning of the tree in Corroboree Park. Four independent condition assessments on the tree however, classified it as hazardous. Given its condition, height and location it was necessary to remove the hazardous sections.  Provision was made for the Gang, Gang nest. On close inspection from the travel tower no nest could be located for the Australian Hobby. Attached is information that about the tree condition assessment and removal process that was provided to residents adjacent to the Park.
