We ventured for our first-ever walk through Aranda bushland today.
Beautiful spot, and am looking forward to it eventually being
well-connected with a soundly-designed and managed Molongolo NR that
stretches from LBG to the Murrumbidgee, connecting with the latter's
reserve corridor.
But I digress. For the second time this year I witnessed a Boobook Owl
being harrassed by a miscellaneous group of much, much bigger birds.
While less inclined to be concerned about Boobooks after learning that
they eat lots of Owlet Nightjars (at the excellent presentation at the
COG monthly meeting), I did feel a sentimental moment for this individual.
Are Boobooks a threat to Currawongs and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos? The
Boobook twice landed on the ground. Was it exhausted? Would the
combination of Grey Currawongs, Pied Currawongs and assorted screechers
eventually kill the Boobook? Would the Boobook last until nightfall?
