Philip,
 
the key to possibly understanding what went on/is going on would be to ascertain how many magpies are actually involved. If it is only a pair, then are both feeding both sets of young? More likely may be one male and 2 females. Usually the dominant breeding female may not tolerate nesting by a 2nd female (but it does happen, as last year in Ainslie), or while you were away, the 2nd female disappeared (for what ever reasons) and the pair is now looking after both broods?
