I have an odd thing in my big eucalypt in my backyard. In previous years either Pied Currawongs or Aust Ravens have nested there, usually after a long battle. This year for the first time (I have been here for 23 years) Australian Magpies have nested there. As it happens I was away (my first time out of Australia) from 26 August to 22 September and I knew they had been nest building for several weeks, so I missed all that came between but I now have two nests in the one tree, about 3 or 4 metres apart, both with chicks in them. It is a pity I was away (only a crazy birder would say that) because I don't understand what has happened here. Two chicks in the upper nest appear ready to leave, (actually they left today) the other appear to be younger (but one still in the upper nest). I am not aware of this happening elsewhere. I don't see that there is more than one pair responsible but it seems odd as there is no disputes with other Magpies. Fortunately both parents are very tame and don't appear to bother any people.
