Hi Rob,
Your hawk is most certainly not a Swamp Harrier for all sorts of
reasons. Most obviously, they are never heavily barred like that. Are
you sure that what you saw in flight is the same bird as in the photo?
As for whether it is a Brown Goshawk or a Collared Sparrowhawk. It is a
Brown Goshawk. Two main reasons: it is the immature plumage phase that
the Collared Sparrowhawk does not have (they go from juvenile to adult)
and although hazy, there is just enough clarity to see the shape and
relative length of the toes, which do not fit a
Collared Sparrowhawk and a Collared Sparrowhawk surely wouldn't bother a
Purple Swamphen.
Oh and isn't it nice to have Kelly's Swamp spelt correctly and not as
though it was more than one Kelly.............. Sorry, some will say
that is irrelevant.

Subject: Hawk at Kelly's Swamp
I went back to Kelly's Swamp on the way home today (3rd time today) and
saw a raptor harrass a Purple Swamphen. I got some (sadly) very blurry
images and I think it was a Brown Goshawk, but it could have been a
Swamp Harrier or Collared Sparrowhawk. Again I apologise for the poor
quality of the images, but does anyone have an opinion on the attached
please? In flight it looked more like the Swamp Harrier according to
S&D - quite grey above and pale below.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
