Mark, I agree - it's astounding that these developments claim to have had
"environmental impact assessments" done, but presumably the results just get
ignored. Development inevitably seems to consist of bulldozing the entire
site, building, then plant a few decorative shrubs afterward (or not, in the
case of suburban developments).
I used to live on the Gold Coast - a nearby area of bush was completely leveled
and the ground reshaped. Not only did it put light industrial construction
within 100 metres of residential areas, a colony of koalas was wiped out along
with short nosed bandicoots and other animals and birds. The "wildlife
corridor" that remained was only one tree wide. The frogs in the strea were
wiped out.
It's all about council getting their rates, and they simply don't care about
the environment.
